Because when the early explorers got here and saw the native Americans, they thought they were "Indians" (as in, from India) because of their darker skin and dark hair. Remember, they were looking for the faster route to the Far East, including India. They thought they had gotten there! As the vast majority of Europeans had never seen someone from India before, they assumed the people they ran into where "Indian".

When referring to native americans:
"The term Indian is commonly thought to have been born of the misconception by Christopher Columbus that the Caribbean islands were the islands in Southeast Asia known to Europeans as the Indies, which he had hoped to reach by sailing west across the Atlantic[citation needed]. Even though Columbus' mistake was soon recognized, the name stuck"

A human being trying to change peoples lives.
The people( Columbus) who discovered America first thought that it was India. So they called the natives as Indians. But it was Amerigo Vespuchi - an Italian-who discovered that it was not India. So they named it America after his name.
