The location of both hotels are not great for a tourist. The Ibis chain of hotels has a number of hotels in Jakarta and none cost more than about 400,000rp. The Ibis Thamrin, Ibis Kemayoran, the Arcadia and Mangga Dua are all good.

Yes, the location of both hotels are not good. If I can recommend you, for not too expensive hotel you can try "Sari Pan Pasific Hotel". The most strategic hotel in Jakarta for 3-4 stars hotel. If you want to go for 5 stars hotel you can go with Grand Hyatt Hotel and Mandarin Hotel. They all located at the center of Jakarta with all the shopping mall and food place are exist. The Ibis Hotel at Thamrin might be ok for you for 3 stars hotel.
If you like to stay late and find some foods for supper, you can stay at ALILA hotel. They have late night supper in that area, open till 2-3 o'clock in the morning, especially for Chinese food.
Here's the hotels that I can recommend you:
5 stars hotel: Grand Hyatt, Mandarin Hotel, Hotel Mulia, Four Season, JW Marriot, Gran Melia, Nikko Hotel, Crowne Plaza and Ritz Carlton.
3-4 stars: Sari Pan Pacific (I think this is the best choice..?), The Park Lane Hotel, Aryaduta Hotel, Ibis Hotel at Thamrin or Slipi, Alila Hotel, Hotel Mercure, Le Meridien, and Menara Peninsula.
And yes for more tourists place is at Kemang area. It's more for cafe and bar.
For more info maybe check this website: http://www.jakarta.hotels.inn26.com/
Be prepare for the traffic jam! :)
Need some info for malls, cafes and restaurants?

Hi,
its depend on your travel itinerary. Which places you want to visit in Jakarta.
Hotel Ciputra is located in the junction of West, Central, North Jakarta....with 5 min walk to city bus station. Adjecent with Ciputra Mall, this hotel is actually quite convinient for you to hopping around Jakarta attractions.
Different from the other one. It is located in the Central and North part of Jakarta...and I dont really think it is better than Hotel Ciputra.
Safety wise, I prefer Ciputra...because its in central, busy area, with two big university near by (5-10 min walks).
I suggest you to search for hotel in Jalan Jaksa...its normally for budget tourist (back-packer), and close to nice cafe and restaurants.
To have better environment, you can stay in Kemang area...its a tourist place (upscale)....suggest you to stay in grand kemang (can reserve at : http://www.jakartaexpat.com)...
Thats all I can suggest. ohh yes also you can email that website I mentioned you above, maybe you can ask the details to them (the local)
Enjoy!!

neither....
for a budget easy access hotel in town is ibis tamarin (thamrin area), formule 1 (menteng area), or grand flora hotel (kemang area).
those areas which i mentioned are the tourist friendly and relatively safe places in jakarta. try look for a place around those areas.

not both...better you stay around thamrin street such as arcadia as it's located on downtown and near shopping centre. you can use busway to go travel to another place.
but if i have to choose, ciputra will be better..fyi, the area around ciputra hotel is very crowded..
