The spa is above the pool and for some reason is it not holding the water. draining almost to the first step. What could cause this?

you have a leak..
possible sorcess are...
the pump, more specificly the machanical seal in the pump.
the drain valve is not closed or is leaking by
broken plumbing(happened to my father in law..cracked for no reason)
if it is consistantly drainin to that certain level(the first step) look to see what is level with that step.

Its called water seeking its own level. If you were to check I`ll almost bet the level of the spa is very close to the same level of the pump. Assuming this higher level is to be maintained, a check valve would probably be required if one is not already in service. This component, if exsisting, should be servicable by your pool tech or a plumber. Good Luck!!!

I would bet it's a leak. Not a pump working backwards. Water is the best acid on earth. Leaks in any plumbing system are common. The trick isolating the leak so you know what to fix. I would suggest getting professional help.

Maybe you Pump and Filter system need an over-haul!
Sounds like the pump maybe in reverse or Not working!
Find a good Pool and Spa Tech!(There's Loads in My Area)
