Can the word friend be used as a term of endearment?

Sweetheart, Baby, Honey are examples of terms of endearment.

Why not! It is good to know someone considers you a friend, and to have them say "Hi, friend" underlines the regard in whch you are held by them. Everyone wants to feel appreciated. A male can hardly go round referring to his friends as baby or sweetheart, can he!

All those terms are ok but not professional. Actually friend is much better than calling strangers sweetheart.
