There could be a couple things wrong. One is that you are iritating the hair folical that is left and the skin around it. If this is the case I would suspect that you have a fairly thick growth of facial hair when you let it grow out. Some options you have for this is not to shave, have the hair removed perminately, or make sure you are saving with the grain of your hair growth. Also some people experince a better shave if they use really hot water, really sharp blades, and also letting the shaving cream sit for a while before you shave to soften the hairs. This is one reason you see barbers wrap people's faces with a hot cloth before they shave them.
You could also run into problems if you are adding after shave RIGHT after you shave. Some people let their skin rest a little bit after a shave before they use after shave, or lotion (this goes for women who shave their legs too).

My boyfriend had the same problem. And this is how we solved it. After shaving DO NOT WASH your face. Get a clean cloth/towel and soak it in lukewarm water and squeeze off the excess water. Use it to clean off the shaving cream. The reason why you may have bumps is because after you shaved the pores are open due to the stress placed on your skin by shaving, by washing it with water it enters the open pores hence the red painful bumps. You might be sensitive to your aftershave also, so try to avoid this for a while and see what's best for you.

This shaving rash is common i suffered for years until i was told to shave using "Hair Conditioner"... Buy an unperfumed brand and massage it into your beard before shaving, leave for a few mins.....after shaving rinse your face with cold water and pat dry...dust your neck with talcom powder and DONT use aftershave it will make things worse.always try and shave downwards. Hope this helps
