Sometimes the midwife will let the perianal area rip instead of cutting it. It depends on how they were trained. If it was me I would say cut it if you think that it will rip, as the healing process goes much smoother. It will take 2 weeks to heal superficially, at skin level, but it takes anything up to three months for the deeper layers to heal. When you go to the bathroom for those first few days, place a rolled up pad over the area to prevent the urine from "burning" you there. Then, as much as 6 times a day, soak or wash the area in a weak salt solution to speed up the healing process.

When they cut you it takes the six weeks to heal, and they tell you not to have sex because you are at a high state to become pregnant during that time. Also your body will be discharging all the blood it held in your uterus during the pregnancy. If you rip depending on the length and size of the tear will depend on how long it takes to heal. You will probably be sore for a few days or so. You will be able to pee, but might have some discomfort with bowl movements. After I had given birth the hospital gave me this spray stuff to use after I went to the bathroom and it took the sting away. They also gave me pads that had an ice pack attached to it. Those really worked

I had an episiotomy a year ago with my first baby. I had no epideril, just the drug(don't remember what it's called) that relaxes you, but that didn't last for very long, I was in labor for 7 hours and my body needed to push the baby out so bad, I was lucky I didn't feel pain down there, just in my middle section like i had to go diarrhea bad, it's different for everyone though. The nurses told me not to push until the dr got there, which was impossible! but to get to the point as soon as the dr. got there he said I was ready to deliver and when he cut me for the episiotomy(which by the way he didn't even ask if I wanted one and didn't even tell me he was going to do it) I did not even feel it, I felt something but not pain, maybe they put something to numb down there? you can ask. My baby weighed 6 lbs 10 oz, and it felt like he just slid out of me, which I was grateful for. He stitched me afterwards which took like 10 minutes and I felt no pain. I think it is worse afterwards, especially when you sit on the toilet or just sit, you have to sit slowly and gently. I heard those doughnut pillows are good. I felt the cut more near my butt area, I felt like as if the baby came out of there instead, ha ha. It just feels like a cut, and it burns when you walk or move but can't feel much when lying down still. Sex will still be uncomfortable for longer than 6 weeks more like 6 months for me, and you may not feel the soreness(cut area) while doing other daily things but when you have intercourse that's when you will feel it, and need to be as gentle as possible until it starts to ease away. Going number 2 took a few days after birth, and did not hurt, but never force it out or you can pop a stitch. You will have to wash that area with a squirt bottle they will give you each time you go and with warm water, it feels so relieving. They might also give you this spray that cleans from getting infections and that numbs it for a while and The Tucks wiping pads are great too. You won't mind any of the discomfort though, because you will be too happy and amazed about your little one, to think about it much. Good luck, giving birth and being a parent truly is amazing and a blessing.

My wife had 3 natural births at hospital.... she's very small, after 3 weeks she felt like trying sex , I declined too shell shocked,!! it takes me longer to get over it than her, She has some scaring from the cutting, they used scissors of some kind , didn't check it out much at the time as I think I fainted at about the cutting stage! My wife wants more children, I just can't go through another birth. Whatever you do make sure you're at a hospital when it happens.

It is a straighter , less ragged cut when they do the episiotomy, so it heals faster, (and most likely tighter.) It's usually just a little snip maybe an inch and a half long and if you tilt way forward on the toilet and hold something from behind over the area, you'll be okay.
Listen, with the lack of sleep, loose belly and a screaming newborn on your hands, I doubt you're going to feel all that sexy for a few weeks anyway.

6 weeks sounds right on target. That's what almost any Dr will tell you. You have to wait for the stitches to heal. I hear it burns a little for a few days but it's not too bad. Chances are though you wont even tear or need to be cut. Look into Perineal Massage. http://www.childbirth.org/articles/massage.html
Hope this helps.

Most drs. prefer not to cut these days, and you can request that they don't.
No one should have sex after giving birth for 6 weeks, to avoid infection, whether they are cut, tear, have no damage, or have a c-section.
It will hurt to go to the bathroom at first no matter what. It still hurt after I had a c-section! But it was only for a couple days. And no matter what pain you go through, it is totally worth it.

i'd say 4-6 weeks, they stitch it up and it is desolvable stitches usually. Mine was about 4 weeks, but im a fast healer, just the episiotomy part. but if you have the baby via c-section, about 3-5 months for that to heal.

After giving birth, 6 weeks without sex will not bother you. The scaring is not noticable.

i think most drs would rather cut than have the patient be torn.....my sister was cut twice with both of her pregnancy but of course she had epidural i was in the room with her during her second and she was laughing didnt seem to be in too much of pain....it was about a month before she was comfortable again
