I love the book...its arguably my favorite. It is a close tie between The Giver and Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (Alice in Wonderland). What do you think?

The giver was such a great book. i finally read it recently and found it fascinating. It really made me think. Did you know that they are making a movie of it?

I liked The Giver, and I also read the related novel Gathering Blue, which I thought was good, but not as interesting. The Giver had so much imagination, with the absence of color in their world, the entire premise of memory sharing, and the freaky scene with the main character's father (about his job). I also like the ending, which is so open for literary discussion. I understand that the author has written a direct "follow-up" novel, called Messenger, which I have not read, and which is supposed to definitively tie up the loose ends from The Giver.

The Giver is an awesome book so I guess its better. If you liked read the Giver you should read Gathering Blue and The Messenger, they are both by the same author that wrote the Giver. You probably read Gathering Blue first, its kinda of a sequel.

I liked much of "The Giver". Actually, I was enraptured by the pale, colorless, unform world.

However, I think the story-telling mechanics were flawed. The escape had the feel of 'deux ex machina'; it was hurried and rushed. And as he approached the new land, there was very little detail and had the air of unreality. Good book? Yes. Great book? No.

Yes, I did like it, but I don't understand why some people absolutely adore it. If you are looking for some other good books for that age group (11-14) I suggest Bridge to Terabithia, Chronicles of Narnia, Shiloh, and Treasure Island.

Very good story. Well written. If the rumor in this forum is true that the movie will be made, I will watch it.
