This is a common misconception. Gov't grants are designed to foster innovative new ideas and technologies which may be considered too risky for private money, but necessary to acheive global technological superiority. There are also many grants available for Non-Profits, though these are generally abused and qualifying for one is all about who you know. Other types of business can generally qualify for somwe type of conventional financing or through SBA. Most people assume that an SBA loan is the same as a grant. An SBA loan is simply a loan in which the Gov't is your "co-signer" and assures the lending bank that they will back up 80% of the loan if you default. NO FREE LUNCH FOR SMALL BUSINESS! You have to get to the size of GM before Uncle Sam will bail you out.

You've only started Dec 23, and I have been writing that answer that grants are not available for starting a for-profit business since I started last year Feb 2006 -- and it is the question that has given me a LOT of best answer points because there are just so many people asking about this question

People are always on the lookout for free money. With the scam perpetuators who advertise their business and their presence on the Web, people get curious that there might be something free somewhere. Afterall, who does not want free money? Alas, it is not true

You might not want go for a grant, but rather a small business loan, yes you have to pay it back, but it will give you the start up cash. if you have your heart set on a grant, consider your approach, put yourself in their shoes and play "devils advocate," what do YOU need to do to fit THEIR requirements

Hi Michelle, The equation isnt quite that simple is it? How does giving a tax rebate to those who dont pay taxes make any sense? How does wealth redistribution not equate to communism?

Because every gardener, plumber, dog groomer, and hairdressing salon would get free $. Gov't. wants to focus giving $ on things that have a chance to bring in a high amount of revenue, as well as possibly help greatly improve the economy/military of the country. Dog groomers aren't going to do that, sorry.

What kind of business is it. Also, are you a minority? Minorities get all sorts of hand-outs from the gov't.
