i would go with not being accepted.
it has adverse effects that last a long time.

one must find an identity first, and that is quite difficult its true.
but what could possibly be worse than finding out your true self and having it shot down by everyone else.

Absence of Identity? The real issue is that too many parents do not take the time to be involved with their children, from an early age on,
into creative learning experiences!

Here is what I am sure of about you, things that you have not done or do!

You cannot read music, play an instrument, tennis, martial arts,
ballet, do not go to plays, concerts, theater, museums, cannot speak read a second language, play chess, do not swim often, part take in photography, fence, have not traveled to Europe, do not take part in any church activities, ski or read for fun!

What kind of identity should you have? Try doing something creative, interesting, any of the above, and you will not have time to think about identity? You will come to know yourself and identities will not matter!

It depends where you are on Maslow's hierarchy of needs.

for some, not being killed ranks right up there. for others getting enough to eat or avoid jail time.

many in Japan ... and now many more so than before in the west ... are suicidal over the prospect of not getting in to the right school and thereby having a good life. perhaps not a misplaced goal .. but terrible that the culture demands it.

related to identity:
we do not have a good ritual to make the end the childhood and the beginning of adulthood.

no, to me is not the absence of identity.

Mostly it is about responsibility and love. They are the biggest problem.

Its the realization that you are a human being, and inevitably, we all die, so then you start to feel like, what the hell is the point of life if we just die, and then that leads to feeling like your just another fish in the pond, so yea, its mortality and absence of identity...

I think you hit the nail on the head, because young people spend a great deal of time trying to figure out who they should become.
