I am a male secratary to a female boss. I work in a large company but report to only one boss. Recently she insisted that I follow a dress code and wear a uniform of her choosing. She picked out an outfit that is a bit feminine. It is a shirt and slacks that are pink and yellow with puffy sleaves. I like my job but have a hard time dealing with snide remarks and laughter directed at me. What can I do?

What she doing is clearly illegal under case law established by the Employment Protection Acts and the Equal Opportunities Act.

A few years ago, a test case established that dress codes and uniforms had to be suitable for the particular sex. The principles established therein are applicable to either sex.

Since it is a large company, you might want to approach the Human Resources or Personnel Manager.

Otherwise, go to a lawyer specialising in Employment legislation. It might be that a letter to the company will be sufficent, but, the ultimate sanction will be a complaint to a Tribunal. (A large company is more likely to want to deal with this quietly.)

If, after your boss is obliged to change her ways, she then continues to give you a hard time, you will probably have a further case for continued discrimination.

Laugh with them and tell everyone that you feel masculine enough to wear an outfit like that. So, if there are any further suspicions, you are willing to help with a friendly demo, if insisted ...
