IMHO they both, in their own way, equally contributed to make this world a more humane one.
Both of their contributions to humanity were already well-known throughout the world before they died, and I remember people in other countries took comfort out of knowing there were people "fighting" (in a peaceful way) for/with them.

Mahatma Gandhi. I was born in India and I live in America. So basically, I know both point of views. I personally think Mahatma Gandhi did more. Well, everyone has their opinions.

Gandhi. His life was a vibrant lesson in self sacrifice for the good of a nation. The march to the sea to rout the Brit monoploy on salt, the spinning wheel while fasting to demonstrate that the natives had the means to make their own clothing and not put up with the Brit's control of the mercantile trade. He was thrice nominated for the Nobel Peace prize, but didn't get it because of the racist tendencies of the committee. Now that's foul.

I'd say Martin Luther King Jr.
he's more memorable
he did A LOT for us back then and even though he's dead, a lot of his dreams are being lived out today.
as for Gandhi, where's the peace?

Gandhi, but only because of the number of Indians affected.
Both had an interest in gaining an adavatage for a small group of people. Neither one has the stature of Mother Theresa.
