Actually it has some history, when Ronald Reagan accepted the nomination for the president he in his speech mentioned that liberal was a four letter world, so if you are one of those single celled animals that thought R. R. was a genius then you picked up on it and use it like a cuss word.

Because the republican doctrine takes advantage of several major flaws in human nature. First being that the vast majority of people are uneducated and will do what people in power tell them to do, the "Sheeple" effect. Second, they influence the decision of uneducated people through the "catapulting the propaganda" effect, by repeating something enough times they set up a mental aversion to the word "liberal", so people associate it with "bad things". Third, hatred of that which is different. Republicans solidify their base by constantly bashing on liberals, which guides their "base" into hating liberals more.
Now, the disadvantage of this tactic is that it "turns off" educated free-minded people... But those people are already liberals, so the republicans don't care.

It's because conservatives are using it as a scare-tactic for moderates and unaffiliated people to lean conservative. They want to make it look like being a free-thinker and believing the rights of individuals should come first will sacrifice our freedom and hand the world to their newest bogeyman "terrorism". I've yet to see liberals making attempts to rally people and spread fear and distrust in the name of national security. More people are seeing that conservativeness is more about being self-centered and trying to PUSH people into their selected lifestyle than it is about helping people and liberation.
When it comes to things like protecting and upholding the rights of different people/groups, settling the national deficit (and now paying off international debts), the conservatives fail to come up with any response at all, and will generally either avoid those subjects all together.. Or make an attempt to bash you and make you out to be an "enemy sympathizing" anti-patriot. Until conservativism is extinct (which it will be eventually, according to past political idealogical trends) we will not see a clear sighted government in this country.

"Liberal" has been used as a slur to get people to join and stay on the "conservative" team. Most people don't know what either term really means now, and it seems that the meanings change every 10 years or so. Oddly, most people don't seem to switch labels, when the political philosophy changes. Consider that modern conservatives are pro deficit spending and pro foreign wars, while liberals are the opposite. "Conservative" used to mean fiscal caution, and staying in our own backyard unless attacked. And how do "liberals" promote personal freedom when they limit or restrict personal choices in matters such as smoking, and seat belt use? People should say they're "independent". It's the only way to stay consistent!

The world is balanced by two opposing forces: positive and negative, Yin and Yen, right and wrong, good and evil, etc ..
I learned not to be bothered by the people on the right, I just work harder and hope to contribute more and live a happy life.
In another word, I give up on them, and treat them as the co-existing evil. Thank god, compare to extremist Islamics, they are actually very mild.

Most people are of limited education have no idea it refers to freedom and defines Democracy. Fascism refers to hard right wing theology such as A. Hitler imposed on Europe....The theory is the use of mind control and fear/hate to promote Capitalism/Imperialism with one party in charge. Money is no object when you are controlling the whole spectrum..This Global Economy theory is nothing more than Fascist politics...and I don't see the Chinese playing ball with it in the end. Very dangerous.

I have no idea why they do it and I don't know what passes for a definition of liberal, either. The net effect is that I don't want to interact with those who use labels and "talking points", instead of researching and developing their own opinions. I suppose the reactionaries have few valid arguments and resort to name calling. The playground is full of them.

Liberalism is an ideology, philosophical view, and political tradition which holds that liberty is the primary political value.
Broadly speaking, liberalism emphasizes individual rights. It seeks a society characterized by freedom of thought for individuals, limitations on power (especially of government and religion), the rule of law, the free exchange of ideas, a market economy that supports free private enterprise, and a transparent system of government in which the rights of all citizens are protected.

Liberals have no public plan ... that is the main reason. They cannot win if they publicize their agenda - why? Because this is a conservative nation. So they hide their agenda....Socialism ... it does not work and it never will because it destroys the desire for success. As for your proud decisions:
Bill Clinton .. he took down the economy and turned it into a recession. He gave away secrets and dismantled the military. He spent more time with Monica than his National Security advisor in 8 years.
Al Gore .. sure glad he wasn't there for 9/11. He should have spent more time campaigning than worrying about global warming...it would have been nice for him if his home state had voted for him right? What does that tell you?
John Kerry ... wasn't he in Vietnam?? Quite easily the worst politician in US History.
What a collection.
