I sometimes think people place themselves where they shouldn't go in foreign countries. Not certain of the details in some of the "killings", but one in particular has partial blame on the tourist. I am just looking somewhere nice, safe, cost-effective for a week or two. I've been to P.V., Cancun, and Mazatland so looking somewhere new. Thanks!

The killings are exaggerated. My family in Indianapolis thinks I'm crazy for going all over Mexico. Yet, there are some weekends when there are 5+ murders in Indianapolis and they don't think twice about going around all the areas. Many times tourists are where they shouldn't be... for example, the American who was killed in Oaxaca, Mexico recently was in the midst of the political riots there. I've been all over Mexico and have never (knock on wood) encountered any problems. As for beaches... it's a shame that the waters near Cancun are so pretty b/c I loathe how touristy it is. If you like that beach, go to the south past Playa del Carmen. Go to the Mayan ruins of Tulum. Huatulco is a nice beach area, as well. There are some neat beaches in the state of Veracruz on the gulf coast. If a beach is not necessary try going to Guadalajara. or Mexico City. Some of the colonial areas are neat, as well. Guanajuato, San Miguel de Allende, Aguascalientes, San Luis Potosí, and one of my favorites, Morelia (and surrounding areas like Pátzcuaro). To sum it up... crime is in every corner of the world. Just exercise caution whether you're at home or away... So, go to Mexico and just exercise caution.

i went to cozumel, mexico in summer 2005 and to the tulum ruins from there. it was an awesome experience and everywhere i went was basically entirely tourist oriented. the port we entered was especially well-guarded and very public, a plaza like a modern version of a classic bazaar. lots of great shops there, and the merchants were all extremely polite, no car-salesman type pressure that you supposedly see in cancun. and you can haggle :D with the merchants at the plaza, but not at the ruins because a majority of those who work there are descendants of the native people who once occupied the region.
good luck and have a great vacation!

I guarantee you have a better chance of being killed here than you do in Mexico. While the incidents you are referring to are bad. They are two incidents in hundreds of thousands of trips.

That said, my fav place in Mexico is Cabo... I love the fishing and the nightlife. My second fav place is Cozumel. Great culture and nature.

Best "cost" would definitely be Cozumel.

I would recommend using pesos. Prices in dollars are usually higher. Example; a hotel in Mexico that I stayed at one time assumed that I'd pay in dollars and they gave me the price in dollars. Then I told them that I don't have dollars. They gave me a price in pesos that came out to be about $15 cheaper per night.

Mexico would be the last place I'd go for a vacation. Too many Canadians killed in "hit and run" accidents.
