Everyone so far has missed the original context for the phrase, in so far as it is a popular saying:
Thomas Gray's
"...where ignorance is bliss,
'Tis folly to be wise." is the closing phrase.

The thought principally relates to childhood, the innocent pleasure that children can have, and whether precipitately enlightening (endarkening?) them of the troubles, duties and woes of life can in any way have a good purpose.

Those who use it in the sense of a deliberate means of ducking an unpleasant reality which needs facing (avoiding a doctor's opinion on a chest pain, for example...) are somewhat distorting the original idea.

If the knowledge can't possibly help, why would one want it? But the "If" is important.

The idea that more knowledge causes more problems occurs in extremely different places, from Ecclesiastes to Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. It's not Thomas Gray's idea alone.

In 1881, President Garfield was shot by a would be assassin at the train station. The president was taken back to the white house. Quickly many medical professionals came in to help the president. A doctor who was a family friend was notified by Abraham Lincoln s son who worked in Garfield s cabinet. This doctor was a friend of the Garfield family, and immediately appointed himself the president s personal physician. He kicked the other doctors out and worked to help the president. The bullet stopped between two back muscles and hit no organs. The president could have easily survived with the bullet inside of him. Sterilization of hands and instruments were not widely accepted at this point in history. The doctor over the course of weeks repeatedly kept probing his finger and many different instruments into the presidents side looking for the bullet. The president originally started to recover, but then took a turn for the worse. He eventually died from an infection caused from non sterilized items being repeatedly stuck in the presidents side. After the president died, an autopsy was performed confirming these facts. Once they were published in the newspaper, 2 of the doctors that were originally kicked out of the white house were reading the autopsy results in the newspaper. One of those doctors then commented, "Ignorance is Bliss". Oh, the name of the Doctor that killed the president through improper treatment, Dr. Willard Bliss.

The saying "Ignorance is Bliss until it turns into a Blister" pertains to people who believe 'denial' is a solution for a particular problem, concern or issue.

I think it means that the experience you earn in life teaches you the basic law of life, suffering is inevitable. Ignorance is not knowing-lack of experience therefore ignorance is not knowing suffering. The opposite of suffering is.... bliss.... I think.

ignorance is bliss!!!
True ignorance is bliss,!!! This is because There is no difference between any thing in this universe Then every thing is GOD and NOTHING ELSE. Thus not knowing anything is being in god and nothing else Then There is only GOD (BLISS SUPREME)

The only way one can be truly happy is by being completely unaware of all the realities, because the realities are sad. If you don't actually know about something it won't really affect you.

If you do not know about the complexities plaguing day to day life than it can not bother you.
You are content to know nothing and easily pleased as such. You seek only to satisfy the most basic urges.

if you are very aware of what is going on around you, and you participate emotionally because of all the evil surrounding you, you can never be happy. if you detach yourself from it all, you can be.
