I actually wrote a long blog on that subject, and just got my blog page up today! yippee..!!
but the title of it is an eye for an eye and I have it set up on my blog page as My first Bible question.
The address to it is brotherjonah.biz/wordpress/
But basically what I took much time explaining, An Eye for an Eye,
actually Eye shall go for eye, tooth shall go for tooth, and a life for a life...
But that is a limiting factor. You are limited in the redress you can take by the exact amount of the injury you suffered. You can't take somebody's life just because he knocked out your tooth or blackened your eye.
It was revolutionary in Moses' day because the usual practice was to saddle up, and you and your crew would ride over to the village of the eye-blackener or tooth-knocker-outer and kill everybody, except for the ones you took as slaves, take everything you wanted and burn the rest to the ground.
Not the usual way the expression is intended.
And have you noticed? The people who insist on justifying their actions by that part of Leviticus will get really offended if you tell them to obey all the laws of Leviticus, which is the whole focus of the book.
