Need to know more about where you are mulching....what do you mean by 'lawn edges'??.. If you are using mulch to stop weeds from growing, it is best to first lay down a 'weed cloth' which will stop the weed seeds from rooting from above or sprouting from below. Also, mulch at least 4" thick to really stop the weeds. You may want to sprinkle a pellet form of "weed and feed" every spring. Many weed seeds are airborn and will sprout in partially decomposed mulch from year to year but this should control most of them.

I use a metal edging to separate between the lawn and the flowerbed. I then use round up along both sides of the edging. In the flowerbed I use leaves that I picked up with my lawn mower in the fall. I believe the mulch you buy has chemicals in it to stop weeds however if they stop weeds they may be stopping more desirable plants as well. The finer the mulch the less you will need. I’m a mulch lover and I would like to use about 3 inches of mulch in the flowerbed. The worms love it, it decomposes which is great for the soil, it keeps the soil moist so you don’t have to water as much, it stops the weed from germinating and it makes it easier to cultivate.

mulch does help keep weeds out. as long as they cover up where the weeds may spring up and keep them from getting sunlight they will work. i would suggest using the smaller, finer pieces of mulch. also, you could always go with round-up and spray it around the edges...works like a champ.

The best weed preventer I have ever come across is pieces of old carpeting. It allows water and oxygen to pass through and stops all weeds dead in their tracks. Being synthetic it last for years and years! Best of all, you can probably get it for free! If looks are important, cover the carpeting with bark or mulch. Good luck!

Finer pieces mesh together better and thus let fewer sprouts through. I use mulch extensively in my beds and in my garden, leaves chopped or grass clippings both work well. Don't use newspaper, I had some I shredded since I'd heard it was good, still was in my garden the next year! Not pretty.

and when the wind blows the seeds of the weed onto wet decomposing organic matter (MULCH), the weed will not grow ? This is the theory ? Use border bricks, and do the job ONCE.
