RMS Titanic was an Olympic class passenger liner that collided with an iceberg and sank in 1912. The second of a trio of superliners, she and her sisters, RMS Olympic and HMHS Britannic, were designed to provide a three-ship weekly express service and dominate the transatlantic travel business for the White Star Line.[1]

Built at the Harland and Wolff shipyard in Belfast, Ireland, Titanic was the largest passenger steamship in the world at the time of her sinking. During Titanic's maiden voyage (from Southampton, England; to Cherbourg, France; Queenstown (Cobh), Ireland; then New York), she struck an iceberg at 11:40 p.m. (ship's time) on Sunday evening April 14, 1912, and sank two hours and forty minutes later, after breaking into two pieces, at 2:20 a.m. Monday morning April 15.

It was the biggest ship ever made at the time (around 1913?). It was proclaimed to be unsinkable. A passenger ship, it left England headed for New York. After a couple days, the captain turned the broilers up to make the ship go faster so it's time would look even more impressive. Soon after, at night, it hit an iceberg. Water started filling up the ship from the hull (the bottom) to the top. Eventually the ship split in half and sunk. There was not enough lifeboats on the ship to save all of the passengers. Many people died. Only a few survived the countless hours in the freezing water in the Atlantic Ocean while waiting for a relatively nearby ship to send rescue boats.

It's a tragic story, with many legends and websites concerning it. A spectacular Hollywood movie entitled "Titanic" was produced in the 1990s.

Hopefully my knowledge helped to inform you more.

Titanic is after the Titans of ancient times, meaning large and invincible. They were fierce fighters and considered indestructible. That is why they named the ship Titanic. It was called unsinkable, but they never thought of an iceberg? It seemed like fate to me, such an odd spot and right in the line of travel. something like the right place but the wrong place at the wrong time sort of thing.

Titanic as an adjective means large. You are referring to the ship, which, on its maiden voyage, struck an iceberg and sank, with the loss of about 1500 lives. You can no doubt find many references via Google.
