What are the places to avoid when going to London?

London is very safe for a large city. If you are doing touristy things and in tourist areas you will be very safe. Use the same common sense you would use in any large city--don't wander into dark alleyways, don't use unlicensed cabs (if a driver approaches you and asks if you need a cab they are unlicensed. Proper london cabs either have taxi lights or are arranged by calling a call center.) At night go out with someone else if you can. The biggest thing to be careful about is pickpocketing or bag snatching. Be aware of your surroundings and when you are in crowds or on public transport pay attention to your handbag/luggage.

London is as safe as any city anywhere, and I would avoid going into the places you would avoid in your own town or city. Stick to the tourist trail and you will be very safe.

Jhon - Middlesex is fine (and quite a large area to generalise!),

As far as staying safe in London goes, generally most places are packed and therefore, safe. CCTV in most areas keep crime under control. Its just a case of being sensible - keep valuables hidden on the street, and stay aware of where you bag/wallet/purse is.

Avoid pedestrian underpasses if they look isolated - cross roads at the lights with all the rest of us.

Use your common sense, if you feel isolated or nervous, then head for somewhere well lit or with more people.
