De Walys was a Norman name i think so it's highly likely that William was his correct name, but maybe spelled a little different- Guillaum or something.
Wallace was NOT gaelic, or a "celt" or anything like that so it would be inappopropriate to call him "Oo-Li-um" as has been suggested elsewhere
Scots history is very very complicated, you would need to go into it in greater depth .

I just looked it up, William is of Germanic origins - Wilhelm
Wil- desire Helm- helmet, protection.
There are some sites that you can look up that will give you authentic Celtic/Scottish names and meanings.
Hope this helps, I think that the name William came about around when the Normans conquered the British Isles as in William the Conqueror.

whether wallace was really called william or not is irrelevant to the main point of your question, the fact is that william is not a gaelic irish/scottish name, so if you call your baby william, you will not be giving him a traditional celtic name. try looking up http://www.thinkbabynames.com/search/1/celtic

The idea that he was some sort of 'Celtic' (whatever that means) highlander is a myth.
He was a lowland Scot and as such, would have spoken an early version of Scots English. He also had a number of Anglo-Norman ancestors.

I wouldn't brag about that. The movie is utter rubbish, go read a real history book. Then name the kid something else.
