What are these called?

I just wanted to know what this is. alot of people from my old school use it on msn. is it made up or something or is it real? they told me that $1 equals to pink and the dollar sign(money) represents a colour. ya'll know what it's meaning is?

I have never seen this before, and I have used msn for quite a few years... maybe it's a US thing? (I live in Australia, but the program is still the same)
