it could be conjucntivitis, an eye infection. You can swab it with some saline from the chemist or make your own with a tsp of salt to 1 litre of cool boiled water.I would see the Doctor if it continues tomorrow esp as it is greeny looking,as she may need antibiotic drops.

It could be pink eye, has she been sick recently? Sometimes when young kids get sick the mucus in the throat backs up in the ears and then the eyes. When they touch the eye infection can set in. Take a warm damp wash cloth and gently wipe the eyes. It will help loosen the goop and make her eyes feel better. I had a friend who used to get a build up around his eyelashes and would take a small amount of babywash on a Q-tip and gently clean his lids every few days until the build up went away. He would have to do this every month or so. Don't try that before talking to your doctor.

Why take chances with a possible infection, especially when it involves the eye, something she'll need for the rest of her life, and especially since she's so young. I would try to get to a clinic tomorrow if possible. www.webmd.com has a "symptom checker" on the right side of the homepage that i find is great for checking symptoms and how urgent of a problem it is, and what home treatments are, but with a child that young, sometimes you can't just go by suggestions for the "general public". If you really can't get in though and are thinking about one of the home treatments suggested, i would talk to a pharmacist and ask if they know if it's safe to do first.

There are so many things it could be. It could be allergies, pink eye, or just an irritant (like an eyelash) that worked it's way out during sleep. It could be nothing or something.

Just keep her hands and your hands away from the eye. I wouldn't worry very much though.
