Poetry is important to a culture and to civilization. It is important to read at least some poetry and try to understand what the author was trying to convey. It helps to understand the historical and cultural times the author lived in. Besides which, the more sophisticated girls swoon when you recite poetry to them. And you know what that can lead up to.

I think it's a great way to express your feelings, because unlike prose you can say exactly what you want to say without having to establish any sort of relationship with the reader.

I have to say, though, that if anyone ever wrote me a love poem I would be extremely uncomfortable, because I find ode's to be exceedingly dull and squirmifying (nope, not a word, but is now!) and sonnet's usually annoy me.

Dark poetry, or poetry that uses language in a clever and interesting way is always great. And humorous poetry is fantastic.

I love Jabberwocky by Lewis Carroll. That's such an awesome poem!

I love poetry, it's a great way to express yourself, and to make you look at the world in a different way. When you write poetry, you can make even the most boring, mudane thing seem interesting just by describing it, or how you relate your feelings to it. I was never one to write poetry until three years ago when I took a Creative Writing course and the instructor thought it would be a good way to practice. Poetry rocks.

Poetry

The love of words,
of cadence set upon by rhyme
caressed within a heart,
tossed upon a tongue to verse
to rhythm, song and spoke emotion.

This is culture savored and renewed
This is the face of Helen,
seen in lyrics of rock and rap
discovered fresh by children
written on walls throughout the city
slammed upon library tables daily.

The regret of the poet,
as the the poetry of yore
founders on mythic remains
bardic singings retreatedly lost
burnt meaning in verse
forced rhyme to lines and rules
of quartet and quintain.

Sappho, Homer, Tupac, Chaucer,
Eminem, Beowulf, Cool J, Bai
Oscar Wilde, Nikki GioV, and Wright
laid down the sound of words
followed the meaning of rhythm
forcing song into language.
and sold the rap onstage. it still
lives on and we embrace it.

(Long Shiren)

So, I like poetry, and think it important to history, culture, and art. How about you?

Love it. To me poetry is art in written form, creatively expressed spoken form . . . Poetry speaks to the soul.

i enjoy meaningful, hearfelt poetry that speaks from the heart and has a good flow. Poetry that is too symbolic, seems sing-songish, or seems shallow and unfeeling is useless.

I hated it most of my life until I was in a lit class with an insane professor who decided to expose us to the Romantics and the Beats at the same time. Now I rather like it.

I can appreciate the elegance of it but, for the most part, I just feel that it is extremely BORING.
I always tune it out when I hear it.
