There's a Bollywood actress in the Celebrity Big Brother house, who has been the victim of the most appalling bullying by a group if ignorant chavs, Jade Goody being the one who was the most vocal.
The bullying, perhaps racism, has caused an International Crisis between India and the UK since Channel 4 have been broacasting increasingly despicable scenes in order for the show to boost its flagging ratings.
The actress in question is called Shilpa Shetty, and she is a huge star in India having appeared in more than 30 films.
The incidents in the Big Brother house have been broadcast all over the world, and Channel 4 has received over 40,000 complaints (the largest amount ever for a programme that has already been broadcast)
Jade Goody was evicted from the house on Friday, but there was no crowd there, as tension surrounding her inflammatory behaviour had led to death threats being issued to the contestants at the centre of the bullying.
People have been burning effigies in the streets of India, and the Indian Prime Minister has made it quite clear he thinks this was racist television.
*add - to Sam16, Shilpa Shetty can hardly be called 'a very long name'.

Others have already said what Bollywood is but I'm here to say that I love Bollywood movies. I'm not Indian but I totally love them. Hollywood movies are way more expensive to make and most of them only last a little less than two hours. Bollywood movies are serious about their storylines and you can expect to be in for a good three and a half hours....but they don't even feel like it....and they don't cost anywhere near the Hollywood movies. They're fun and sad and just make you feel good....and they're totally clean.

Yahoo is an international community.
Bollywood films' popularity extends well beyond India and is growing in news value as more people discover its history, artistry and entertainment. The Bolly wood film industry is at least as large and nearly as popular as Hollywood's, and Bollywood produces lots more movies annually.
The West, and the US in particular, is just not as aware of Bollywood's popularity and influence in the world.

Bollywood is indeed A part of India's Film industry but not the entirety of the Cinema in India. What it is is a term used for the Mumbai-Based Hindi language cinema. it comes from a mix of Bombay(which means Mumbai in english) and Hollywood. hte name is unofficial but it is a part of the entirety of cinema in India. The reason you've been hearing about it recently is because it is along with Tamil, Marathi, Bengali, Telugu, Malayalam, and Kannada are the largest in the world as far as the number of films produced and the most tickets sold. So it would have been inevitable that sooner or later we would hear about it here.

americans wouldnt typically get or enjoy bollywood films. theyre mostly indian musicals. but bollywood like the guy said is 90% of indias movie industry. similar to how america loves reality tv, india loves musicals. they have strict traditions in their entertainment as well. for example no kissing in the movies, a kiss on screen would be a quite explicit scene in a movie. youve been seeing it on the news alot lately because one of the stars, with a very long name, is on the british version of Big Brother, the reality tv show. its like americas big brother but the british version is with celebrities. well there was a controversy dealign with the bollywood actress, blaming remarks she received as racially charged because she is indian. that same star and her husband were voted the most beautiful couple. and she, was also voted the most beatiful woman in the world last year. so the news isnt necessarily surrounding bollywood as much as the most popular actress in it. its just that bollywood is much easier to spell than her name

Yes, it is the Indian "Hollywood" and has been around for decades, but you are right that it is now getting more mainstream publicity.
I think there are a number of reasons, mainly more western audiences are trying Indian films and also cinemas have realized the market for the films is large, so far more are being shown in cinemas. It really is just the media becoming more aware of a large untapped audience.
