it means to play that note 3 times.

If it isn't specified in the tab, it's going to be hard to determine what is intended.

Most likely a note in parenthesis means it's an implied note. Either held from the previous note, or struck optionally.

In that "Layla" tab it looks like the notes in ( ) are simply ringing / held over until the next strong downbeat. Ordinarily parentheses can represent ghosted notes or artificial harmonic notation such as 14(2) -- push down the second fret and tap at the 14th fret.

It means optional. You can do without it. Nothing will change much with regards to the tune of the chord.
