That was Tomar-Re! At the time of his retirement from the Corps, the Guardians reviewed his single biggest failure, the failure to prevent Krypton exploding. He was blinded by a supernova while trying to gather a rare element that would damp out the chain reaction in Krypton‘s core long enough for Kal–El to grow to adulthood to become the greatest Green Lantern of them all.

The Guardians reasoned that when the Universe creates a hero the Universe has a greater need of him than the Green Lantern Corps does. Tomar-Re retired with honor! (And, one hopes, a full pension.)

I can’t recall the title or issue, but that was the gist of the story. I still remember the look of shame on Tomar-Re’s face when the Guardians alluded to the death of Krypton, and the tears of gratitude in his eyes when they forgave him.

Great question! Throw a few more at me!

I don't think Krypton, being an idealized world, needed a Green Lantern. Plus it might have been too far away for the Corps to have positioned one.

years ago, it was Abin Sur, the guy who preceded Hal Jordan. He was not from Krypton, but his district included Krypton and Earth. They may have revised this since then with a different version.
