There are many many meanings to MAD

1. My favorite- is the comic book edition MAD magazine-Alfred E. Neuman is still waiting for an answer to the eternal question, "What, Me Worry?"
2. MAD is a high-quality MPEG audio decoder. It currently supports MPEG-1 and the MPEG-2 extension to lower sampling frequencies, as well as the de facto MPEG 2.5 format. All three audio layers — Layer I, Layer II, and Layer III (i.e. MP3) — are fully implemented.
This is Linux based
3. Mutual assured destruction (MAD) is a doctrine of military strategy in which a full-scale use of nuclear weapons by one of two opposing sides would effectively result in the destruction of both the attacker and the defender. It is based on the theory of deterrence according to which the deployment of strong weapons is essential to threaten the enemy in order to prevent the use of the very same weapons. The strategy is effectively a form of Nash Equilibrium, in which both sides are attempting to avoid their worst possible outcome — nuclear annihilation.

I dont like this one.

4. And finally - I guess if all of the nuclear playing superpowers want to play "Ill send you a nuclear warhead first if you think you are sending me one", this is the definition of mad that you wanted us to define in the first place- mad, and fit to be locked up.

I cannot answer this beautiful question. But one of the meanings of mad I know that you are so immersed in something that others call you mad. It it one of the essential ingredients of life. Without becoming such sort of mad, we miss many hidden joys of life.

MAD IS BLOWING OFF STEAM LIKE A RELEASE VALVE.

IT KEEPS YOUR MIND REGULAR AND WITH OUT IT, WE

WOULD KEEP THINGS BOTTLED UP INSIDE OUR MINDS

AND LOOK FOR A WAY OUT, LIKE DRUGS AND ALCOHOL

FOR A RELEASE VALVE.
