I've always wondered why human babies dont have the common sense to try to refrain themselves from jumping or falling off the couch or any other high place. It seems like any other baby animal like kittens or puppies seem to have the basic instinct and or common sense not to attempt it.It seems like they want to but have the ability to know its going to hurt them if they do.It also they seems like their afraid to.

Most babies do, probably has something to do with their gene pool, are they related to you? Kidding, I've see studies where they use a glass floor and babies will not wander onto the glass showing that they do recognize the danger. Babies often fall because of their lack of coordination or because their weight carries then over the edge. Toddlers on the other hand will get so carried away in the fun that they do things without thinking.

It has to do with development. Almost all animals are required shortly after birth to be able to defend and provide for themsleves. Remember those videos of African water buffalo calves having to stand and walk within hours after birth or the heard would leave them? This does not apply to humans. Most human babies do not learn to walk until a year old, but the families "puppy" is outside chasing cats. If you take the 7 to 1 dog year rule into account the puppy at 2 months is really a kid at a year and half, and at that age children usually know about height and falling

Look at the size of the puppies and the kittens then look at the size of the baby, compare that to the size of the drop from the couch, that would be like a baby jumping off of the roof of the house. There is a big size diffrence there. Thats just my opinion.

I'm not sure but in general I'd put it down to instinct... Animals have to fend for themselves while children rely on their mothers so they aren't very cautious...
