Crickets aren't all that expensive. You don't need to feed them every day. A dozen small crickets per toad, twice a week is fine. I buy 3 dozen for less than $4. The only thing that bothers me is the long drive to the store that sells them. In nice weather, you can dig up some bugs from your yard, as long as no chemicals have been applied to your yard. They will eat small worms and pill bugs. Those are the easiest bugs to get. Worms you can dig up, and for pill bugs, turn over rocks, bricks, pavers, etc.
By the way, my firebelly toads don't much like mealworms. I only get them when the store is out of crickets. The fat toad (Piggy) might eat two mealworms. The big aggressive toad (Booger) will eat one, but the small toad (Peewee) won't touch them.

THIS IS AN ENTRY OFF OF THE LINK BELOW!
"These toads eat just about any live foods, but don’t feed them anything with a hard shell (i.e. mealworms, beetles, etc.). Mine eat crickets, small or chopped earthworms, and the occassional feeder guppy when they’re in the mood to do a little fishing. They’ll also eat waxworms, flies, small grubs, etc. Just make sure any insects that you feed your toads have not been contaminated with any sort of pesticides; your toads are extemely sensitive to chemicals and poisons."

Meal worms don't eat their predators from the inside out. Don't know where you got that info from, but it's way off.
Frogs and toads will eat anything that moves and they can put in their mouths. Check around your pet shops or even online and see what different live foods you may find for your pets.

Mealworms are best, (they don't eat them from the inside out). Ask the person you bought them from at the pet store if they have any other suggestions.
Good luck.
