A good wood burning stove controls the draft better as it can be closed right up when there is no fire. Besides in the stove, you can control the speed of combustion and heat radiates in all directions where a fireplace only directs it out from the wall

While a fireplace it nicer to look at a store is much more effecient. A fireplace actually draws the warm air up the chimney while the stove radiates heat into the room. Get a stove with a window if you like looking at the fire like I do.

Typically, wood stoves are more efficient, but not all wood stoves are created equal. Many are designed more for looks than heating, and some, even worse, are barely useable on a daily basis. I have an Earth Stove, which seems to be pretty good. If you want a truly efficient cooking stove, I recommend building an Efusta Justa.

If you use a fireplace it would be good if you would have a fresh air intake on the unit. This way it takes outside air for burning and does not suck the warm house up the chimney.

Wood burning stoves perhaps radiate more heat into the room.

Wood stove.

Fireplace's often allow more cold air in than they actually produce in heat;

A good airtight stove can put out a lot of heat, and reduce many other utility bills.

(That and it's a comforting heat)
