Have a good circle of friends around you. Keep the enemy close by so you can grab the knife when he tries to stab you in the back.

It does not means that u have to be socialised with yr enemy or watch their every movement, it suggests that you must be constantly alert and be aware of their present and must be always on guard and must not be complesant without the threat that there is no enemy around you. In the wild, alertness is the main factor that keep you survive in the olden days.
The beginning sentence of keep your friends close is universally understood of its meaning, as such, no need for me to elaborate.

Keeping an enemy close can prevent an unexpected strike. It doesn't take Einstein to figure out that the toughest and most destructive blow comes when it's unexpected.

It means keep a close watch on your enemies because you never know when they'll sneak up on you and pull some nasty stunt or back-stab you.

You keep your friends close because you enjoy their company.
You keep your enemies closer (this is a play on words because you are actually not keeping them physically closer to you, but you are keeping a closer eye on what they are doing.)
You want to know what your friends are doing so you can share it with them.
You want to know what your enemies are doing so you can be prepared to defend yourself against them.
You want both your friends and enemies to believe they are your friends. Whether they are your friends or your enemies depends solely on how much trust you have in them.

It means be interested in what your friends are doing, but be intimately aware of what your enemies are up to.
Or, to put it another way, if you don't know your friends, that could be inconvenient, but if you don't know your enemies, that could be deadly.

you already know what your friend is up to cause that's your friend. but your enemies..you don't know what they're up too since you don't want anything to do with them. so you need to watch them b/c they may attack you when you least expect it.
