Does it recirculate the heat generated in the engine back into the passenger compartment? How do they prevent the Carbon Dioxide (or monoxide) from coming with the heat?

the heater works off the coolant that helps cool off the engine, its pumped in to the heater core, where a motor blows the heat off the core and heats the inside of the car,or truck,,and this is controlled by a heater valve that allows you to select the right temperature ,for you, that is comfortable, other wise if you had no control of it,it would burn you up all the time,,but thats about it,its also controlled by a thermostat that keeps it from getting to hot in the engine,,other wise that hot of coolant mixture would be too much heat to bare, and the engine couldn't with stand temperatures like that either,,good luck,i hope this help,s.

It uses the heat from the engine coolant that you pour into the radiator. The liquid circulates through hoses to a small radiator under your dash called a heater core. The heater fan blows air over the heater core, out the vents, into the passenger compartment. No exhaust gasses are used, so no gas problems.

It isn't heated air from the engine compartment. The engine is cooled by water/antifreeze. That liquid goes into a heater core in the car, and a fan blows air, heated in the core, into the interior of the car.

the engine coolant (which is very hot when the engine is warm) is put through another radiator separate from the one in front of your cooling fan. it's called the Heater Core, and an electric fan blows air through it and through the vents, making heat. There's no exhaust involved, so there's no carbon monoxide.

the heat works when your engine gets hot causing the coolant to heat up. then it flows through the thermostate into the hearter core. the heater core is how you get your hot air into the passager area.
