First things first, it is very important to identify what sort of roaches you have. There are MANY varieties of cockroach and not all can be eradicated with the same method. The only roach that nests indoors is the German cockroach. If it's not a German roach, it is what is referred to as an "occasional invader", or an insect that has managed to wander into your home from the outdoors. These roaches are easy to eradicate as they will not establish a nest indoors. They will do their best to survive in your home now that they're stuck there, but will not thrive. Generally these types of roaches show up after a rain when their nests outdoors are flooded. Sometimes it's just bad luck. Either way, any old bug spray with a residual effect will suffice. Spray regularly around your home inside & out. Germans are a whole different ballgame. Your best defense is to make everything spotless FIRST, then spray a residual insecticide everywhere they hide, along with a good roach bait.

First clean real good. Believe it or not I had a friend that used the cleaner 409 on everything. It worked until she stopped cleaning again and her kids ate all over the house and food was all over the house. She had them so bad I wanted to stay out side in the winter and the heat of the summer. I'm allergic to roaches so now I don't visit very often and she's a real nice person. But the bugs were resistant to everything else but 409

Get rid of open food and corregated cardboard boxes. Every night and after use of drain, put poison in the drain traps of all drains and toilets for a few weeks.

do not feed roaches or give them water.

Store food in sealed containers. Never leave food, crumbs or trash uncovered anywhere in your home. Do not leave uneaten pet food out overnight. If you must leave dirty dishes out overnight, put them in the sink and cover them with soapy water.
Use a trash can with a tight lid. Avoid placing your trash can under the sink. Empty the trash can often. Put garbage in closed plastic bags. Rinse beverage and food containers before you recycle or throw them away.

They sell boric acid next to the raid at walmart. It kills roaches and fleas as well as many other bugs too. I've put it in the carpet when my aunt brought her flea infested pets over to my house and flea-ed up my place.

Boric acid, it is very effective when used properly for killing cockroaches and most other insects. You can also get a house lizard, they are natural enemies and will eat them. More information at http://tinyurl.com/ofxkk
