I was under the impression that indie meant independent of major labels, but it seems to have taken on a genre? Please clarify! Thank you!

Indie music is any genre of music that that is independent from commercial, pop, and mainstream music. For instance, people like Justin Timberlake and 50 cent are mainstream, pop musicians while musicians like Belle & Sebastian, who are less famous and most of the time better, are indie musicians.

Same as a major label except artists have control of their material and get to keep most of the money from their sales.

Indie bands are well-known, but not so well-known that everyone has heard them. Some people say indie is like "emo" music too. So... yes and no. It really depends on who you're talking to.

it does mainly mean that the artist isn't affiated with a major label, but anything that is once little, eventually turns main stream, and now people have turned the term to mean a sort of newer alternative style music.

indie is what you said but also usually has like acoustic guit, piano, synth, banjo, or other wierd stuff in it. its AMAZING
