i play bass every once in a while. i dont own one but i like playing it.

play the root when the guitar hits it, but don't be afraid to go up the scale, or skip a few that he guitar is hitting. just keep beat, and don't change anything drastic, venture from the path, but don't make the mistake of taking over the show.

5ths and 7ths are always good when used in conjunction with the root. If you dig Claypool, sharp 4ths are a good choice but use tastefully. But remember that the core function of the bass is to outline the lower register of the chord, so don't ignore playing the root.

Play around with the Major and Minor Scales. The Pentatonic is good for rock music. (1, 3, 4, 5, 7 of the minor scale).

passing tones work really well.

Or, play the melody, everyone will hate you, but if the siger ever wants to quit you can be all like:

I can make my bass play everything you sing anyway, Burn!

has tons of bass players talking about it
