Depends on how far back you go, so often one's discoveries were made standing on the shoulders of someone before them...But i like Tesla, he invented radio and radio-control amongst many other cool things...

Galileo Galilei -
Understanding that the sun doesn't revolve around the earth is the beginning of the humility we all have to have in order to really ask questions.
He was great and in my opinion perhaps the greatest scientist ever because of the ridicule scorn and ostracism he faced in challenging the church.

I would have to agree with Asimov on this one and say Benjamin Franklin. He invented the lightning rod and proved that God doesn't zap buildings because he's pissed at the folks inside.
