I had an employer who wanted to do that to me before as part of the screening process, which was not okay. Once they offered me the job, it would be fine (since I would be the assistant controller, which is a corporate accountant). It makes absolutely no sense to screen based on that, so I'd ask their reasoning.
I don't think it's a valid screening process because they either find out a score (or three), and other people can affect your credit ... they won't know if it's not that high because you don't have much history, or what if you had a divorce and that ruined your credit? If they get a full report, then they find out a lot more about you personally, about your spending and debts that is not really their business. You do not need to disclose martial status, if you have been divorced, and other such things, including debts. It is outrageous that someone would not get a job because they have poor credit ... what if it was terrible and has been on the mend?
I foresee laws being put in place in the future that prevent employers screening applicants based on credit scores when they are not in a credit-consulting or financial planning position. I think this will happen in employee-friendly states, and may already be that way in some, but none I know of.
Also, people who steal may have good credit because they have the extra money to pay their debts on time ...

Your credit rating says a lot about your judgement, self-discipline level, and maturity. I can't think of a better tool, short of the interview itself, to evaluate a potential employer.
That being said, I think interviewers should allow applicants a chance to explain a poor credit rating.

Your credit history says a lot about how responsible you are. It's not just about handling money. Think about it from the employer's perspective. If you were interviewing two people who were dead even in every other aspect, but one has been in collections and in a ton of debt, and the other has a clean credit history, which one would you hire, honestly?

It's a clue into what kind of person that is. Can they handle responsibility, budget their resources, are they dependable, etc. It should not be a sole deciding factor, but it acceptable that it plays a role.

Nothing to do with being a criminal (that would be a criminal check).
more to do with responsibility, which may be why you fail to see the connection

Yes, More and more companies are doing this, auto insurance companies even do it at times. They feel it shows a better character of person if their credit check is ok.

I hate it when they do that. As if credit rating meant you're going to steal from them or something.
