It's not a "prep" thing. Emo is a horrible trend that makes cutting oneself and suicidal tendencies look like a form of non-conformity (even though it is a form of conformity) and artistic expression. It glorifies depression, and depression is something that should be treated NOT something that makes a person unique.
Also, the idea that Emo simply means a person is "emotional" is also harmful, because of its associations with cutting, depression, and suicide. Being emotional does NOT mean a person does those things.
I'm not a prep and I think being called Emo is insulting. I ALSO think being called a prep is insulting. Why not just be who you are and forget about trying to fit into a stereotype!

in a way 'contender' is right, not all Emo people cut themselves, but from what i understand the music is "pro" missery, Contender is also wrong, because the poster of this question is assuming that all Preps hate emo people.
I had the opportuinty to go to a club once with a friend into Goth (i know its not Emo, but its similar) Some of those people tend to want to be outcasts, so that they can complain about others. Its a self fulfilling action.

Emo is not a trend, it's a type of music. Preps don't like people that stick out of the crowd. That's why they like to pick on them. And to the person who posted first, not all emo people cut themselves. Get your facts straight before you assume. I am not emo nor prep by the way.

"Preps" hate so called "Emos" because of the fact that being Emo is very in your face, rebel, I don't care what you think. They like to express their individuality which is now being so mainstream steriotyped that being an individual means looking like everyone else. Where as "Preps" like to "fit in" and only associate with others who "fit in", and they view the Emo group as not acceptable of "fitting in". Its purely because they are both social groups wanting the exact same thing...ATTENTION! Their ways of getting it are just different.

ok i dont claim to be emo but im labeled as one....i go to a school in bumfuck arkansas with 180 people in 9th through 12th....and i hang out with everyone.... theres like 2 others who are "emo" here and we all just hang out together no conflict at all goths jocks preps punks we're all fine with each other.... the natural enemy of both is the redneck..... as for preps though its like whatever....i havent got picked on for being different and first all ANY EMO WHO CUTS IS A F|_|CKING POSER they make emo look bad for the rest of us....its subculture people...theres been alot over the years...and besides we need to stop focusing on the skinny emo kid and start zeroing in on the closed minded pieces of shlt so mindlessly plowing away at their cousin....

i hate emos because they are such cowards why do they cut them selves and talk about wanting to die and dont actually kill themselves? i am not a prep by the way

Emos complain alot that there lives suck when most of them are just finding an excuse to get attention.
