These characteristics are not inherent in the shell. They exist because the boys themselves grant them. When it is held by each speaker at the meetings, it is a powerful symbol of order, civilized behaviour and democratic process. But as order breaks down, so does the power of the shell and at last its power is shattered completely as the shell itself is broken.

Characteristic is structure, I believe you are asking structure. as may things that give order you will find it has a cone or pyramid shape to it - it Eco's levels of leadership - 1 at the top serves many at the bottom. Check out images on line and look how a conch shell has similar shap of cone.
