Does anyone have any idea why you have to go through Springfield, Illinois to get from Houston, TX to Albuquerque, NM?? It doesn't make much sense.

Because there is no direct train route from Houston to Albequerque. You would be better off in this instance taking Greyhound.

There are several routes through texas and NM on amtrak, some south, some mid-state .... but none that go both.

go to http://www.amtrak.com, click on routes, then on west, and look them over.
