When I was diagnosed with social phobia I was prescribed Prozac. When Prozac didn't work I was given Celexa. I don't think that there are pills specifically for social phobia. From what my councilor told me Anti-anxiety or anti-depressants can be prescribed (not saying that is all that could be prescribed.) I was diagnosed 5 years ago though, possibly there has been some advancements?

Instead of a pill, how about a technique that you can learn that will not have the nasty side effects of a pill, and will keep you healthier and more at peace as your life unfolds? I'm talking about the energy therapy called Emotional Freedom Technique. It is easy to learn and easy to apply. all the best!

multiple SSRIs are approved and proven effective for socail anxiety - main three now are paxil, lexapro and soloft (which just went on generic market as sertraline and may be best first choice)
Now effexor has just gotten the indication - it is a different class: SNRI

I advise my pts start with SSRI as above - they can work great with next to no side effects if any
good luck

There are many SSRI's used for this purpose. I have General Anxiety Disorder (GAD) and have used both Lexapro and Paxil for it, to easy my anxiety. Both have worked nicely! Best of luck to you.
