He would have visible balls hanging down- you can't miss them. He could also have one testicle not dropped- vet can tell you right away if that is the case.
Some geldings get that way with mares. At the stable I am at there is a 29 yr old QH gelding who was gelded at 6 months of age. When a mare is in heat, he will get an erection, break through fences, and sweat like he just "had some fun". Acts exactly like a stud- and we know for sure he is not.
Our geldings also mount the our mares all of the time when they are in heat- it is a halfhearted gesture, but I think the lead mare pushes them to do it, lol, because she won't leave them alone.

Your horse is likely a ridgeling, also known as a "rig." That means he has one or both testicles inside his body cavity, and you will need a vet to check to tell you if he is. If so, it will cost a lot to have him gelded, as it is a major surgery.
However, some geldings will mount mares. Maybe they were gelded late and had already learned about the pleasure of mating! We had an Appaloosa gelding who covered mares all the time, but was definitely gelded. I'd call a vet to be sure, because a rig can certainly impregnate a mare.

Your gelding may in fact be just that, a gelding. A lot of times when a stud horse has lived for some time with his testies dropped and ready to breed and then goes to get gelded- he may still act like a stud for up to 4 months after having his testies removed.
Your gelding could also be "proud cut" where only one testie was taken from him. This means he will retain all the qualities of a stud while not being able to perform his breeding duties.
I'll tell you this though- don't trust that he's a gelding if you are already having doubts about his manliness. I have a little yearling paint stud who when he was mounting other mares in heat and "performing" just like a large stud, everyone said he wouldn't be able to breed cause he was to young- well low and behold he got three of the four mares pregnant that he came into contact with. So trust your instinct.

He probably covered a few mares before he was gelded, and knows that girls are for 'fun'! Or he was 'proud cut' meaning only one testicle had dropped at the time of his castration so only one was removed. He can still sire foals this way. Trust me, someone told us our gelding was a gelding, but after he covered a mare we had him checked, and low and behold!!! he still had one tucked away. Luckily the mare didn't take. Trust me, you can definately tell with a horse, if he is stallion or gelding. You can hold one testicle in both your hands. I have a stud donkey that is only about 11 hands tall and his are huge!!! Great for having him checked. Some geldings tho are just still feel very manly! I have a shetland/welsh cross that we know for certain is gelded, yet he still try's to mount the big girls (funniest dang thing on earth to see if you ask me!) He isn't tall enough to do any harm tho, and the mares humor him and stand still, even tho he can't reach

I've actually had to check on a number of horses. If you dont see or feel any testicles hanging, he is most likely a gelding. However, one of my lesson horses we bought had to be gelded twice (all before we purchased him). The first time, both testicles hadnt dropped so he still had one up in him which was good enough to get the mare in the pasture with him bred. He was checked by a vet after his owners noticed and gelded again. On the other hand, if he was gelded later in life, like a pony I know, he may still have the urges to mount even though it does no good. The pony I know is a great boy, you just dont turn him loose with mares in heat(simply because most of them dont want to be messed with, for safetys sake of him and mare they stay separated). If your concerned, have a vet check even though its expensive, it'll give you peace of mind

Stallions have very visible testicles.
Geldings do not.
Some geldings are "Proud Cut" which means when they were gelded, some testosterone was left in them. If that's the case, a horse could still actually breed with a mare.
Stallions are much more "wild acting" than geldings are...depending on the breed.

This is pretty normal. Many horses that were gelded late still act like a stallion at times. They don't have the hormones rushing through them, so they aren't dangerous, but they do have the learned behavior. Often they are biters, or just really confident and pushy.
However, there are blood tests that can tell you if there are still hormones in his system. Sometimes if the horse is not gelded right the horse will still act studdish.
Definately have the vet out and ask about having a blood test done.

If he was intact, believe me, it would be obviously apparent. Horse testicles are about the size of your fist. One of three things going on here: 1) he was gelded late in life, and hasn't forgotten what girls are for or 2) when he was gelded, a remnant of testicular tissue was left behind, so he still has some testosterone and therefore, sex drive or 3) he was cryptorchid (had a retained testicle in his abdomen) and when he was gelded, the obvious testicle was removed, but they didn't go in and look for the retained one. So again, he still has testosterone and sex drive. In any of these 3 cases, he will be sterile. My money is on #3, it's not easy to find a retained testicle, and it's expensive to try because you usually need to go to a big university-type hospital to have abdominal surgery done on a horse.

my gelding has done the same thing, its good you are getting him vet checked just to be on the safe side. meanwhile it might be a good idea to keep him away from the mares, try putting him somewhere else if he is in pastor because he might get a bit agressive or she might and you dont want any hurt horses.

If he has testicles, then he is a stallion, although I had a part Andalusion who was gelded but he so thought that he was a stallion and had mounted quite a few times.
