i have never done it using plastic,,i have used an old blanket,they work well ,but i would think the plastic might freeze to it,and make it a lot worse,you might could try it,it might work well depending on the thickness of the plastic,anything beats having to get out there and scrap that stuff off the glass and it real cold,good luck maybe it will help it.

I don't think so because I think that you would get condensation or blowing snow/rain/sleet under the plastic possibly causing the plastic to freeze to the window. However, it might help prevent really bad ice build up under certain condition. It sound more like a good idea when you want an easy and quick way to remove snow from your windshield. Sounds like you need to test your theory.
I do have a suggestion though...and I swear that this works;
you can prevent ice from forming on a car windshield overnight by coating the window with a solution of three parts Heinz white or apple cider vinegar to one part water. My mom once read about this and had told me about it, it has always worked for me (whenever I would remember to do it). I have never tested it in extreme weather conditions though. So it will depend upon where you live.
Good luck to you!

You might want something a bit heavier than a plastic bag (like cardboard or a vinyl cover, but yes, they do work. Most car related stores sell windshield covers, ir not, then you can use a small tarp, just run it into the car before you close the doors, and use the wipers to hold the bottom down.

Well it might work. But if we are talking about serious ice from a freezing rain...i think it would just freeze the bag to the windshield and you would then have two problems.
