How do I know what the first day of my period actually is?

I always thought it was the first day you had a steady flow, like actually the red blood, but then my midwife told me to count the first day I start to spot. Which is it?

the first day you have a spot is your first day. usually the red flow comes on the second day.

The first dy you see blood...which may start out with just spotting. By the end of that day, you flow shold begin....that is day 1.

When you find blood and then more blood.
