I just looked it up out of curiousity - and it would appear that the singer (now 60) has no intention of ever telling. Though she does deny that it has anything to do with Warren Beatty.
She figures it was the mystique that gives people something to talk about long after the song has come out.

Probably her husband, they are seperated, divorced he was a great song writer, big ego.Though she says its a bit of each of, Warren Beatty, Mick Jagger, Cat Stevens and James Taylor.
