I think I was 13 and it was The Gunslinger by: Stephen King. And thanks for your advice. I'm the depressed kid.

I don't really know- I remember being excited to go to kindergarten, "because then I can read stories to my baby brother..." He's 2 years younger... but he's not the baby anymore, there's 3 more kids!
Ever since first grade, I've been a voracous reader. I found when I was in 5th or 6th grade that I didn't like the children's section in the city library- all the books were too short!
I'm 31, now and I've read all the Isaac Asimov books I could find (realized something interesting once...), all 6 of the Harry Potter books (waiting anxiously for #7!!), Robert Asprin (M.Y.T.H. Inc, Ann McCaffery (Pern, The Ship Who Sang), JRR Tolkien (Lord of the Rings, etc), Robert Kiyosaki (Cashflow Quadrant),... I was hooked on Pierce Anthony's Xanth series for a while (it's gotten too heavy/boring, though...), Sword of Truth series by Terry Goodkind (VERY good!)
Currently, my author of choice is Laurell K Hamilton... Anita Blake series.

The first stories I remember hearing that sparked my interest were those my third grade teacher read to my class. There was lots of Roald Dahl (Matilda, Danny the Champion of the World, etc.) and The Last of the Really Great Whangdoodles by Julie Edwards and The Search for Delicious by Natalie Babbit. I loved those books and I still reread them sometimes. It was Mrs. Bernardo's reading to my class that made me love reading, even if I was only being read to. Actually, when she read Matilda, I bought a copy and took it to school and followed along while she read it from my desk. She knew she sparked something in me and she let me be different from the rest.

I don't remember my favorite book to read myself, but my mom used to read me Charlotts' web and things like that. That made me want to learn how to read. Now, I'm an avid reader. My favorites right now are Terry Goodkind (sword of truth novels) and Laurell K. Hamilton (Anita Blake series and the Mary Gentry series). Just as a side note- I got Annie hooked on them too!!! Try them, you will like them!!
Go dog Go is a good one, so is Green eggs and ham and There's a wocket in my pocket. My girls love all the Dr. Seuss stuff.

The first book I ever read on my own (outside of the grade-school readers in class) was also the first book I ever checked out of a library.
It was "The Golden Book of Astronomy", by Rose Wyler and Gerald Ames, pub Simon and Schuster, 1955
I obtained a B.S. in Astrophysics in 1973.
Last year I did a search on EBay for the same edition of the book and found it in a bookstore in Hawaii. I bought it right away; it even has the same binding as the one I read in 1955.
Obviously it made quite an impression on me!

Wow, a thumbs down vote for that. I thought all the folks with ideologies of blind hatred were over in the "politics" section.
My answer was "serious". That's a real one, voter. Look it up.

I can't tell you that because I don't remember. I thought it was Harry Potter but it wasn't I know it wasn't. I read before adolescent books. I'm just not sure which picture books it was...I read a lot of Dr. Seuss, Disney, Beverly Clearly, Ameila Bedila?, Bernstein Bears, etc. etc. I really don't know.

"Go Dog Go" is definentlly one of my fav Dr. Suess books eva!!!!!! I read alot with my parents and my sisters (i'm a youngest child)when i was little. I remember reading "Junie B. Jones" and "Ramona" and "the Magic Tree House" series. But it was only in the last couple years that i really picked up reading...........i think it was......... Lemony Snicket that did it, i couldnt put it down. after i finished all 13 I was sitting there and i realised i was really bored. so i made my parents take me to the library. and ever since then, i just read anything i can get my hands on.

The first book I remember feeling involved with was 'Good Night Moon,' since my parents read that to my brother and I every night (along with another book). The first books that really inspired my passion for reading were both Beverly Clearly (Mitch and Amy was my favorite) and The Boxcar Children series, which I was reading in first grade. Picture books never held much appeal for me.

Go Dog Go is definitely the best book ever. My father used to read it to me until I learned to read it myself. Whenever in a hat, we would ask each other "Do you like my hat?" and go through the whole conversation. I still have my original copy.
