Lack of acid decolorizer, thereby not really decolorizing the bacteria so they retain the color of the original stain making them gram positive. It may also be because the counterstain may not have been prepared properly thereby have weak staining properties, and the bacteria appear gram positive. It may also be because of overstaining with the original stain.

overstaining with crystal violet, under-decolorizing, not applying counterstain (safranin or methyl red) long enoughnot washing off the slide very well, or maybe the organism just stains gram variable.
