Janis was a girl from Texas who came out to San Francisco in the mid-'60s. She loved blues singing and tried to pattern a lot of her vocals like her idol Big Mama Thornton. She had a loud, gritty, just very slightly off-key singing voice for someone as relatively small as she was, and when she wasn't singing, she was pretty soft-spoken.
She was with the band Big Brother and the Holding Company, then went solo. She liked people, liked to party, drank Southern Comfort while performing, did drugs, and was very sweet. She kissed like an angel. She is still missed by those who knew her.

She was the best back in the days of Woodstock as a blues and
rock singer. She had a wonderful sometimes whiskey voice that
sang and had alot of hit songs. I think if you wanted to hear her
music and voices similar to her style and genre , today you would
listen to Joss Stone who is wonderful and Melissa Elridge.

Radar has this one pretty well covered. One of my personal fave. Saw her in concert and had the privilege to meet her. Just couldn't leave the drugs(horse) alone.
