I know they've sold a bunch of records, and their hits still get radio play today. Why? Their music is the essence of soulles, whiny, purely commercial soft-rock, and nobody in that band can play. It's a shame the Velvet Underground STILL wallows in near-obscurity, while the Eagles are a household name.

Dude...I have wondered that SO many frigging times. Usually even bands I don;t like have one or two things I can enjoy. The Eagles have NOTHING I can even tolerate. They make me ill. The Eagles and Elton John would be high up on my most disliked list. Did you know the best selling album of all time is the eagles greatest hit????? I remember that one scene in Big Lebowski, where he says I had a rough day and I hate the f****ing eagles. I almost choked on my raisenettes laughing. The odd thing is...as much as I hate the Eagles....I LOVE Joe Walsh. very strange. Also love Warren Zevon, and he was friendly with several of them. SOme even consider him part of the same music scene (I disagree with this).

As for the Velvet Underground...I don;t know if i;d call them obscure. They are among the more influential rock bands ever. The old cliche was not that many people bought their albums..but everyone who did started a band. A one of a kind Velvet Underground demo recording was recently sold in an auction for several hundred grand....and is now officially the most expensive piece of music ever sold. Obscure to me is The Monks (who had a lot of influence on the Velvet Underground) or 13th floor elevators.

I know it a hard concept to take in- people sing songs that you can understand what they are really saying. Did you ever her of Stepenwolf - walk on stage and just started playing together, they were a great band of nobodies. Well the Eagles are a bunch of somebodys.
