I was wondering which one is better to wrk for(salary..etc), when I get a job next year or something(um...planning ahead..) I LOVE animals and I know ALOT about them, except I'm not very good at dog walking(I have problems having my own dog to heel!!lol) I know the care basics of dogs, cats, birds, fish(I LOVE fish) and even some reptiles. I also want to know what age they normally hire-I'm 14(15 nex year) and I'm only getting a job when I get to high school. thx:)

Don't do it dude!

I'll never forget on my 15th birthday my family was taking me out to dinner and on the way there, I saw this new pet shop opening up about a mile from my house.

First thing I did the next day was ride my bike up there and apply for a Job and was hired (After I got my parents permission and filled out the correct work permits)

Looking back, the best day I had on that Job was 3 months later when I was fired :)

But seriously, you may think its cool being in high school working at a pet shop, but it aint all that glamerous. It pretty much involves you working for low pay cleaning up after animals. Do you like cleaning up POOP?

Not to mention that, school should be the most important thing in your life. When I got my pet shop Job I was in 9th grade and was just starting high school. This Job totally screwed up my first year of high school, and I FAILED the 9th grade because of it.

Luckily my parents never found out, because I was smart enough to hide it and make fake report cards on my computer and was able to avoid anyone from the school from speaking with my parents.

What I had to do was work by butt off during my Sophmore, Junior and Senior year just so I would graduate with my class in 4 years so they wouldn't know what happened.

I never had to officially attend summer school, I ended up taking 1 summer class my sophmore year in computer graphics, just so I would have the extra 5 credits so I would have enough to graduate my senior year. My mom knew about the summer school class, but she never questioned computer graphics she just figured I had nouthing to do that summer and supported me going. Little did she know the real reason :)

If you want to make some money at your age, start cutting lawns and shoveling snow. When I worked at the pet shop, they would pay me $80 every 2 weeks back in 1996 and had to work every day after school. When I started cutting lawns I was making a good $100 per week and I only had to work on Saturdays.

When I was 18, I started my own business and got into selling satellite television and make about $80,000/yr +

If you absolutly have to get a Job, get a Job somewhere where you don't have to get dirty. As a business owner my Job is very stressfull, but I do sit behind a desk all day long with a computer infront of me.

Sorry but there is no "training department". There is a certified trainer (who does not work for Petco) who comes to teach the classes. Store employees have nothing to do with it. Just like how the adoptable dogs and cats are from local rescue organizations, and the people who come in to give low-cost vaccinations are not Petco/Petsmart employees, either. The policy might be different at Petsmart but I doubt it. If you are unhappy at Petland, well, you're going to be doing pretty much the same thing at both Petco and Petsmart! Good luck. I would advise you to apply to doggy daycare centers in your area as opposed to pet stores. Edit: sorry had to fix spelling and grammar

Big stores like that suck...they really do. You will most likely find yourself working a register or stocking cat food rather than actually talking to people about animals and really helping them. Try to get a job at a smaller local pet store, or a fish store if you really love fish.

I don't think they will hire you until you are at least sixteen, and possibly 18 in some states. Until then, how about volunteering at a zoo or nature conservation facility in your area?

Petco but if your into animals that much you should try your local zoo. They are always hiring helpers and it's much more fun than working in retail, plus the money and discounts are better. Widen your horizons!

I worked at Petsmart as a kid (15 years old) and it SUCKED. Most large retail chains do- crappy pay, crappy hours, crappy customers and crappy bosses.
