This is an interesting theory. But I don't buy it. It doesn't account for the 1500 or so animal species with observed homosexual behavior. And most gay men would just go out and hunt with the straight men; being gay doesn't affect ones ability to hunt.
I think that if there is an evolutionary purpose for homosexual feelings, it would be as Freud said, the sublimated feelings produce male bonding and tribal closeness. But I don't think there is an evolutionary purpose for outright homosexuality. My personal opinion is that there isn't a homosexual gene; it is due partially to a developmental accident that occurs during gestation that is more likely to occur as a woman has more children and partially to environmental factors that occur after birth. If you look at the older brothers article, it support the gestational accident theory. Looking at the twin studies article, it shows there is an environmental influence, since the concordance for identical twins is not 100%.
The most interesting article I've seen on homosexual etiology is about experiments on a flock of sheep at Oregon State University that are 7% gay. They are trying to alter the gestational hormones to produce engineered gay rams. From the article, "Roselli and his colleagues at OSU are using the gay rams to test what is called the neurohormonal theory of sexual development: that hormones from a developing fetus fix its sexual identity by orchestrating brain organization. Too much or too little of these powerful chemicals, or shifts in timing, may lead to homosexuality, the theory predicts.
"Last year, Roselli found that a brain region linked with sexual behavior was twice as big in heterosexual as homosexual rams. The difference seems to exist even before birth, he said. The gay rams also had lower brain levels of an enzyme that activates testosterone and promotes typical male sexual behavior."
The article also states: "rats, hamsters, ferrets and other lab animals flip-flop their sexual behavior when scientists manipulate the hormones they're exposed to before birth"

Your theory is just exactly that...a theory.
So in kind...here's mine:
I think that homosexuality is a biological form of population control. There are FAR too many breeding humans on the planet. The result is an out of balance eco-system. Humans have evolved with an intense sexual need and desire, or there just wouldn't be so many of us would there? Don't you think then that homosexuality would increase because of this? We NEED sex. We're wired for it. If there's no biological need or desire for more offspring, then the only biological choice would be to turn to sex without creating offspring. THIS may result in SOME but not all of the homosexuality.
FYI: Some other animals, several tropical fish for instance, can change sexes to help balance an off balance school. Just a little example of what mother nature does to correct itself.

It's funny to see people pondering over something so simple. People are gay because we are. It's not a defect. It's not a sin. it's just an interchanging variable like having long hair or a big chin or puffy cheeks or any other characteristic. And if i were straight, and i had a wife, i don't give a crap if the guy who was protecting my wife was gay or not, i wouldn't trust any man with my wife while i was away "hunting"
Your a moron, go die

Well, I imagine women only stayed at home after we developed better tools and now we have this modern woman, man's brain child. if one could go back to those primitive humans you'd probably have trouble telling the difference between male and female. I don't know why there are homosexuals, just like I don't why birds get to have wings and we don't. It is what it is. I just accept the fact that people are who they are and that there are some things we may never have the answers to.

Considering you actually aren't "dissing" the GLBT community I think this should be taken seriously...
That is a very good theory.....here's my own!
homosexuals/transgenders (since neither one can have natural birth together, ex:a transman with a woman will not produce children)------may be around to slow the process of over population!
Bisexual men and women---to balance it out.....
think about that one for a while.....
whether you belive in god (god made GLBT people to balance and slow over population) or Evolution, we evolved this way so as to keep and balance the population.....
It works, and either way, it's natural (which has been proven to be engrained into us before we are born, therefore making it natural for GLBT people to be the way we are)......
just a theory though, lol

Your theory may be accurate, and can also be based on scientific facts. Women who have a gay son have been shown to be more fertile than women who do not.

there may be some validity hidden in some of your arguments. However you are right gay will always be with us...because it always has...and in order to have been with us this long it must serve some important evolutionary advantage

ther is no gay gene. Typically gay men, grew up without male role models so the only way they jknow how to act is like a woman. That my other theory.
I know quite a few lesbians and the majority of them don't know thier fathers either.
